In the 1920’s, the first Westerner seeing the head carved at Goa Gajah, thought it was the face of an elephant. No one is sure what the figure represent. According to 14th century Javanese scribes, this was one of Bali’s principal Buddhist sanctuaries. Yet in the dark tunnels of its cave we find Hindu linggas and a statue of Siwa’s son Ganesha, elephant god of Hinduism. At every turn one is confronted with elements of both religions, ranging from the 8th to 14th centuries. To the left of he cave is a small shrine housing a 1000-year old statue of the Buddhist Hariti, protector of children. There are two small Buddhas in the lotus position, also tentatively dated to the time of great Borobudur.

Fantastic sunset, snorkeling, diving, or just lazing on the beach are only a few examples of the attractions Lovina has to offer. While you are lazing on the beach, enjoy the sun going down on the horizon with the mountains on Java as a backdrop. Or go early in the morning to see dolphins jumping and diving in their natural habitat approx. one kilometer off the shore.

Kuta proper remains the whitest stretch of sand and is a big draw for those who want to test their surfing skills with both a beach break and a reef break further out. Its popularity continues to grow and for all ages, it is a wonderful place to lay your sarong, frolic in the waves and soak up the warm sun.

Not far from the main road, Gitgit is an impressive 40 m waterfall that gushes into a deep pool. A swim here can be very refreshing, although local legend has it that couples bathing here together will eventually separate. Although Gitgit is virtually a northern suburb of Singaraja and less than an hour from Lovina, there is hotel and restaurant just across from the ticket sellers

Goa Lawah squats behind the beach gazing sullenly out toward the island of Nusa Penida. Its three chunky meru stand at the entrance to a deep cavern, their tiered roofs of black palm fiber stained with the dropping of the thousand of bats which dangle from the rocky overhang. The bats flit out at night to feed on pollen and nectar. Regarded as the guardians of the temple, they are protected by the Balinese and quite easy to approach. They are not the only sacred creatures in Goa Lawah. The priests are happy to show visitors the large rock phytons, which coil luxuriously near the shrine and feed on fallen and wounded bats. Nobody knows, how far the cave extends, it being taboo to venture to deep, but one story claims that it tells that there is a submarine tunnel to the powerful temple, Pura Peed, on the facing coast of Nusa Penida.

The architecture is combination of Balinese, Chinese, and European. Balinese architecture can be seen in the stone carvings, statues, and wayang reliefs on the walls of the building. The influence of Chinese architecture found in the motifs carved on the doors, windows, and other decorations. European influence seen in the shape of the building with its wide verandah named Maskerdam. Apart from the unique combination of its architecture there is unusually high gate reaching 25 meter high, made of red bricks decorated with wayang motifs.

About 5 km southeast of Amlapura, are the ruins of a vast royal pleasure garden, built in 1919 and suggestive of a kind of esthetic delirium on the part of Royal Karangasem at the beginning of the 20th century. The base-reliefs on the surviving pavilions of the Ujung pleasure garden show the same elongated style found in reliefs in the Puri Kanginan. This water palace has three large pools. Furthermore, the architecture is combination between European and Balinese influence.

The remain of this glorious culture was damaged by the earthquake of mount Agung eruption in 1963 and was badly damaged again by the big earthquake of 1979. Although it is just the ruins left, the impressive spectacular of the past could still be seen especially the enchanting beautiful scenery.

Bukit’s most famous landmark is the temple Pura Luhur Uluwatu, an architectural marvel situated on a headland at the westernmost tip of the plateau. According to the local tradition, the first Uluwatu temple was built by Empu Kuturan in the 11 th century, as one of the territorial temples of the island. Dang Hyang Niratha, the 16 th century reformer of Balinese Hinduism, rebuilt it in its present state. He is said to have elevated to heaven from it premises.
The temple is the best known for its sunsets over the long breakers of the sea downward, but it has also one of the most exquisite architecture of the island.
Pura Luhur Uluwatu, the amazing temple perching on the edge of stiff cliff on the South Coast. Like a ship of stone afloat in the sky, Pura Luhur Uluwatu is poised 825 feet above the Indian Ocean. The temple is carved from the enormous limestone rock upon which it sits at the farthest edge. Ulu means “head”, watu is “rock” and luhur implies “heavenly”, “ancestral”, “original” and “transcendent” all at once.

Legend says that the temple was built by Mpu Kuturan in the 11th century, and then rebuilt several hundred years later by Danghyang Nirartha, the Javanese high priest who brought renewal of Hinduism to Bali in 16th century, in anticipation of his ultimate release there. Sacred monkeys roam freely over this high and airy place

Pura Besakih is not one temple but a vast complex of temples sprawling across the mountainside. For most visitors, the first impression is of the literally hundreds of delicately towering meru, their many tiered roofs of black palm-fiber thatching pointing skyward like a fleet of rockets awaiting the signal for lift-off.

Pura Besakih is not a launch pad but a landing field for the gods. The central temple in the complex, Pura Penataran Agung, is dedicated to the god Siwa. Pura Batu Madeg is dedicated to Wisnu. Pura Kiduling Kreteg is dedicated to Brahma. There are nineteen more temples spreading up the mountain slopes, each with its own purpose and ceremonial season, but the three dedicated to the Hindu Trinity are the most important. Their orientation in relation to each other and the mountain is reflected in the three raised lotus-thrones, or padmasana trisakti, in the second courtyard of the Pura Penataran Agung, with Wisnu, Siwa, and Brahma sitting from left to right, though some say seats are not assigned

Some of the resorts have private beaches but most areas are accessible. The stretch past the Hilton Resort has been a public beach and during the wet season, the outer reef there is a popular surf break. At present you will still find some simple warungs selling good food at cheap prices along this beautiful stretch of white sandy beach that offers excellent swimming. Conditions in a protected lagoon
